Carmelite Hermits of the Purity Martyrs

Welcome graphic

***A proposed charism that will begin as Congregational Recluses for the Social Services Division of the CAMM/CCMM.***

The Carmelite Hermits of the Purity Martyrs will be an eremetical community made up of those who were raped or otherwise assaulted, but remained chaste.  We ask that those who did suffer these assaults have their issues resolved before making application to this proposed charism.

The community will be Carmelite of the Ancient Observance (O.Carm).  The habit will be that of Carmel, with a red scapular added (sewn under the brown) for the community's patrons; and a cream-colored cappa with two red stripes at the elbow for the Passion of Christ.

The patrons of the community, aside from those typically associated with Carmel, will be the Infant of Prague for Healing; St. Germaine of Pibrac (patron of abused children); and the Purity Martyrs--those who were murdered in the course of sexual assault.  There are a number of these women's causes for sainthood before Rome at the present time.

The community may, through necessity, be bi-ritual.  All prayers will be in Latin.

The hermits will live in Charterhouse formation--individual hermitages off a central cloister.

We are still discerning the possibility of "donate" sisters, who will do not only the external work/maintenance of the hermitage, but will also cook for the hermits.

Remunerative work will include a Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder clinic and refuge for survivors, particularly those in the "Infant" stage of PTSD.  Please reference the link for the "Stages of Survivorship" at the top of this page.

This project will likely emerge from one person living the charism.

Habits for the levels of formation:

Nova: all white

Postulant: white capelet added

Novice: habit received with white veil

Temporary profession: no change

Perpetual profession: black veil received
