After the child was prepped for transport, the captain insisted that the engine crew tag along with the squad to
the hospital.
"She's going to be okay, isn't she?" he asked Dixie.
"We're doing everything we can for her," she said. "This is a rough pneumonia bug going around, particularly
for the little ones. I only wish that her parents had known that Rampart wouldn't charge if they couldn't pay."
The crew groaned.
"Doesn't the hospital have any job openings--anywhere?" asked the captain.
"Are you suggesting her parents submit applications?" said Dixie. "I suppose they could--if they wanted to."
"Whatever happened to Tommy?" asked Chet.
"Still in a coma in the pediatric ICU."
"And Cain and Abel?"
"Broken nose. Social worker was called in, though. Something about mom's story wasn't jelling."
"You keep us posted on these kids," said the captain. "If there's anything we can do. . ."
"I'll give you guys at 51 a call," Dixie completed.
