The Benedictines of the Immaculate Conception are a Roman Catholic
Community of nuns who follow the Rule of St. Benedict in their beautiful Gothic abbey, on the outskirts of a village,
in 70 acres of England's green hills.
The nuns are contemplative, have daily Mass, and sing the full Divine Office seven times
a day.
They also engage in practical Service to the people by running a Playgroup and a Nursing
Home within the Abbey grounds. This special 'service' aspect of their life has been part of the community since it's
foundation in 1624, when the nuns started a boarding school.
They are contemplatives in constitutional enclosure, combined with service. This mixture
makes them a unique Benedictine, non-congregational, praying, serving, community, following the Benedictine motto: Ora
et Laboura (prayer and work).
The church and community of Oulton Abbey, from their foundation to the present day,
are especially dedicated to Our Lady under her title of the Immaculate Conception.
